The Caps' Early Season ///Début de saison des Capitals

After 15 games, the Caps stand a 5-9-1 for a total of 11 points, tied for the worst in the Eastern Conference.

I have seen a few games and personnaly believe that their play has been better than their record indicates. Ovechkin has been doing his share and they sorely miss Alexander Semin because of injury. I also think the four new guys (Nylander, Kozlov, Poti and Backstrom) bring a lot to this team.

However, if the results don't improve soon, they will end up no better than last year.

J'ai vu quelques uns de leurs matchs et je crois que leur jeu est meilleur que leur fiche l'indique. Ovechkin fait sa part et l'équipe manque les services d'Alexander Semin, un excellent marqueur. Je crois également que les quatre nouveaux (Nylander, Kozlov, Poti and Backstrom) renforcissent beaucoup l'équipe.

Par contre, si les résultats ne s'améliorent pas, leur fiche ressemblera étrangement à celle de l'an dernier.

Caps in Low-scoring Affair ///Peu de buts?

Thanks to NHL Centre Ice on my laptop, I watched some parts of the Capitals-Senators pre-season game last night (2-1 Ottawa). My only hope is that with the new offensive firepower that the Caps now have (Nylander, Backstrom, Poti, Kozlov) to go with Semin and Ovechkin, that these low scoring affairs won't be the order of the day during the upcoming season.

Grâce au service Internet NHL Centre Ice, j'ai regardé des bouts du match de pré-saison des Capitals contre les Sénateurs (remporté 2 à 1 par Ottawa). J'espère que les nouveaux joueurs offensifs des Capitals (Nylander, Backstrom, Poti, Kozlov), qui se joignent aux Semin et Ovechkin, mettront un terme à ces matchs avec peu de buts marqués.

Canada Russia Again? ///Un autre sommet Canada-Russie?

The Russians are looking for a rematch of the classic 1972 Summit Series. Although I'm all for it, it will be tough to cheer against Ovechkin and Semin. Hat tip to Kukla.

Check out this interview with Olie Kolzig prepared by Off Wing Opinion in which, among other things, he compares the talents of Alexander Semin and Tomas Fleischmann. It's encouraging to see that two young Capitals talents are being compared without even including the most talented one of them all. it tells me that the Caps have more depth than in previous seasons.

Back From The Dead? ///De retour parmi les vivants?

The Capitals, after an extended losing streak, have played well in three straight games, capping it off today with a 7-1 win over Tampa, on the strength of Alexander Semin's hat trick. It's amazing how the game is often all about getting the breaks to go your way.

///Les Capitals ont terminé leur longue séquence de défaites et jouent très bien depuis trois matchs, incluant une victoire de 7 à 1 aujourd'hui contre Tampa Bay (grâce entre autres au tour du chapeau d'Alexander Semin). C'est surprenant à quel point l'on peut exceller lorsque la chance nous sourit.

Signing Datsyuk? ///Datsyuk à Washington?

During last night's Washington Capitals loss that deserved to be a win, TSN colour man Pierre McGuire mused about the potential fit between Pavel Datsyuk and Alex Ovechkin. Datsyuk will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and he's certainly a good set-up man. He's not a physical player a la Dainius Zubrus, and I'm not sure that he can be a true first-line center, but I'm intrigued by the chemistry he could build with Ovechkin or Alexander Semin while Nicklas Backstrom develops. Plus he's got amazing one-on-one skills just like Ovechkin.

///Au courant de la défaite des Capitals de Washington (qu'ils ne méritaient pas) hier soir, le commentateur de TSN Pierre McGuire a mentionné le potentiel intéressant de jumeler Pavel Datsyuk avec Alex Ovechkin. Dastyuk sera un agent libre sans compensation cet été, et il est un excellent passeur. Il n'est pas un joueur physique comme Dainius Zubrus, et je ne suis pas certain qu'il peut être un joueur de premier trio, mais je suis intrigué par la chimie qui pourrait s'installer entre lui et Ovechkin ou Alexander Semin pendant que le jeune Nicklas Backstrom poursuit son développement. En plus, il a du talent à revendre, tout comme Ovechkin.

Well Enough To Win, But... ///Assez fort pour gagner, mais...

There are some nights when you play well enough to win, but still come up short. The Capitals put up an honest effort last night against the Ottawa Senators, yet lost 3-2.

A few random impressions from ScotiaBank Place:
-Alexander Semin has some great moves, and he's gusty enough to try them. He's the Capitals' risk-taker.
-Alex Ovechkin scored again, and made some brillant plays. However, his defensive game and backchecking hustle still leave me cold. A few times, he was standing around in the defensive zone, waiting for his mates to get the puck to him. Unacceptable. I was hoping the Washington Post article criticizing his defensive play would have at least goaded him into hustling back more often.
-The Capitals played a good road game, and tried to lull the Senators to sleep in the second, but got into penalty trouble at the most inopportune times.
-Their powerplay needs a half-board playmaker (we don't have one!) to go along with all the shooters out there, in order to convert more often.
-Eric Fehr didn't look out of place.
-Olaf Kolzig made some brilliant saves, yet let in his trademark three goals. He's very good, but not great since he rarely keeps the opposing team to one or two goals.

They made an exciting game of it against a more talented team, but couldn't bury the puck when they had their chances.

///Il y a des soirs où l'on joue assez bien pour gagner, mais sans récompense. Les Capitals de Washington ont fourni un bel effort hier soir contre les Sénateurs d'Ottawa, mais ils ont quand même perdu 3 à 2.

Quelques impressions en vrac du Centre Scotia :
-Alexander Semin est un magicien, et il n'a pas peur d'essayer des jeux dangereux. Il est un véritable preneur de risques;
-Alex Ovechkin a marqué encore, et il a créé de très belles chances de marquer. Par contre, son repli défensif et son jeu dans la zone des Capitals laissent à désirer. Il se tient debout à la ligne bleue dans sa zone et attend que ses co-équipiers lui obtiennent la rondelle. Inacceptable. J'espérais que l'article récent du Washington Post qui critiquait son jeu défensif l'aurait au moins movité à être plus responsable défensivement;
-Les Capitals ont joué un excellent match sur la route, ils ont presque rattrapé les Sénateurs, mais ils ont pris de mauvaises punitions au mauvais moment;
-Pour que le jeu de puissance passe au prochain niveau, il faudrait un fabricant de jeu et excellent passeur (on n'en a pas!) pour accompagner tous les francs-tireurs;
-La recrue Eric Fehr s'est très bien débrouillé;
-Olaf Kolzig a effectué des arrêts spectaculaires, mais il a laissé rentrer ses trois buts habituels. Il est très bon, mais il ne se hisse jamais au rang des meilleurs gardiens du circuit car il permet presque toujours trois buts ou plus.

Les Capitals ont eu un bon match contre une excellente équipe, mais ils n'ont pas pu convertir leurs chances de marquer.

The Russians Are Coming! ///Les russes arrivent en ville

The Capitals are coming to see me in Ottawa tonight and I'm thrilled to be going. I'll get to see Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin live again (although the Jan 16 game here was nothing to write home about). Semin is catching up not only to Ovechkin, but also to every goal-scorer in the NHL. With a goal tonight he can eclipse Peter Bondra (thank you God for Peter Bondra)'s record of twelve goals in a month. I'm hoping that our talent can outshine the Senators tonight, and that our troops can outwork the tired Sens (really late start to that game in Montreal yesterday).

///Les Capitals s'en viennent me voir à Ottawa ce soir, et je suis ravi d'y aller. J'aurai la chance de revoir Alex Ovechkin et Alexander Semin en personne à nouveau (bien que le match du 16 janvier ici n'était pas très spectaculaire). Semin gagne du terrain non seulement sur Ovechkin, mais sur tous les bons buteurs du circuit LNH. S'il marque ce soir il éclipsera la marque de Peter Bondra (merci Dieu pour Peter Bondra) de douze buts en un mois. J'espère que notre talent brillera plus fort que celui des Sénateurs, et que nos troupes pourront dominer les rouges, qui doivent être fatigués d'avoir attendu si tard avant de commencer le match contre Montréal hier.

Anyone missing Willsie? ///Qui s'ennuie de Willsie?

When the Capitals let unrestricted free agent Brian Willsie sign with the L.A. Kings last summer, I wondered why we would let a 20-goal scorer get away (19 actually). With the emergence of Alexander Semin (currently seventh in league scoring with 29, only two off the pace), no one is missing Willsie. He only has 5 goals in 52 games for L.A..

Avec l'émergence d'Alexander Semin (présentement en septième place dans la ligue au niveau des buts avec 29, et à deux buts seulement du sommet), personne ne s'ennuie de Willsie. Il a seulement 5 buts en 52 matchs pour les Kings.

He's Semin like an All-Star Now ///Semin chaisant, il devient une étoile

With another two-goal game to help beat the Hurricanes 5-2 (his fourth multiple goal game this month), Alexander Semin is making the NHL look silly not just for snubbing him for the YoungStar team, but also for the All-Star team. With his 26th and 27th, he's now two goals away from the league lead in goals and has many more than most players on the All-Star roster. Rest assured, it's the last time he misses one for a while.

///Avec un autre match de deux buts pour aider les Capitals à vaincre les Hurricanes (son quatrième match de deux buts en janvier), Alexander Semin met la LNH dans l'embarras, eux qui ne l'ont pas sélectionné pour le match des étoiles, ni même pour le match des jeunes étoiles. Avec ses 26e et 27e buts, il est présentement à deux buts des meilleurs marqueurs de la LNH, et a plus de buts que la majorité des joueurs qui participeront au match des étoiles. Soyez sans crainte, ce sera le dernier match des étoiles qu'il manquera pour un bon bout de temps.

Cold Team Meets Hot Team ///Une douche froide pour les Capitals

Last night's game at Scotiabank Place was a good example of what happens when a struggling team meets one on a roll. They get steamrolled. The outcome was never in question, and I could sense that this team was thinking like they were in 2003: "If we can just get out of here with a 0-0 tie, we'll get a point and won't be totally embarrassed by them". Ovechkin was tentative, and did not hustle on many plays (tantamount to heresy in my view). Semin played without enthusiasm and seemed lost. Only Matt Bradley impressed me with his work ethic. Brent Johnson did his best, but was outmatched by the Sens firepower and his own team's reluctance/inability to create plays and gain momentum. This one would have been a stick-smasher for Kolzig. In this long night of the midseason, the Caps have to find their way out of the doldrums. To me, Hanlon's decision to let the players motivate themselves needs to be reversed.

///Le match d'hier soir au Centre Scotia est un bon exemple de ce qui arrive quand une équipe en léthargie rencontre une équipe qui roule. Ils se font écraser. Le résultat n'a jamais fait de doute, et je sentais que les Caps pensaient comme en 2003 : "Si on peut juste se sauver d'ici avec un match nul de 0 à 0, on aura obtenu un point sans se mettre trop dans l'embarras." Ovechkin hésitait, et il ne s'est pas forcé plus qu'il le faut sur plusieurs jeux (une hérésie, selon moi). Semin avait l'air perdu, et jouait sans enthousiasme. Le seul qui m'a impressionné par son effort a été Matt Bradley. Brent Johnson a fait de son mieux, mais il a été battu par la force de frappe des Sénateurs et l'incapacité de son équipe à créer des jeux et du momentum positif. Si Kolzig aurait été devant le filet, on aurait sûrement assisté à son spectacle de bâton fracassé. Durant cette période creuse de la mi-saison, les Caps doivent trouver la motivation pour se sortir de cette torpeur. Selon moi, Hanlon devrait renverser sa décision d'octroyer aux joueurs la responsabilité de s'auto-motiver.

Ovechkin Live Tonight ///Je le verrai en personne

Ovechkin comes to Ottawa with the Caps today and I have tickets to the game! I'm looking forward to seeing his enthusiastic play live again. I'm also looking forward to seeing Alexander Semin live for the first time. Ottawa will be a formidable opponent as they are playing very well lately.

///Ovechkin est à Ottawa avec les Capitals et j'ai des billets pour le match de ce soir! J'ai hâte de voir son jeu enthousiaste en personne à nouveau. Je verrai Alexander Semin en direct pour la première fois. Ottawa sera un adversaire coriace car ils jouent très bien en ce moment.

Caps Lose, Sens Almost Lose

My two favorite teams both had laborious games last night. The Capitals gave up 5 goals and lost to the Bolts, while the Sens ran up a 5-0 lead before squeaking out a 6-4 win on an empty net goal. The Sens played an awful third after dominating the first two. Alexander Semin continues to be a bright spot on the Caps, with two goals and a 100% shooting percentage! Ovechkin continues to develop his playmaking skills with two more assists.

///Mes deux équipes préférées ont connu une soirée laborieuse hier. Les Capitals ont accordé 5 buts et ont perdu contre le Lightning, et les Sénateurs ont presque laissé une avance de 5 à 0 leur échapper. Les Sénateurs ont connu une mauvaise troisième période après avoir dominé les deux premiers tiers. Alexander Semin continue à impressionner, avec ses deux buts et son pourcentage de franc-tireur à 100% pour le match. Ovechkin continue à développer son sens de la fabrication de jeux avec deux mentions d'aide.

Alexander Semin of the Wahington Capitals is getting me excited about his talent. He can make brilliant moves at top speed, has a very quick release and seems to be hungry to score. He's in a great situation, playing in Ovechkin's shadow.
